Welcome to my Cigar Parlor

Handmade premium cigars can be a fun hobby.

It is easy to learn the 3 basic criteria by which cigars are categorized. They are; Brand, Color, and Size.

Brand

Brand is of course the manufacturer of the cigar. My favorite brand is Padron. There are many popular brands out there. You have probably heard of; Arturo Fuente, Cohiba, Macanudo, Partagas, and many many more.

Color

Color is the shade of the wrapper, the outside layer of the cigar. There are 6 color grades of cigars. They are Claro claro (green), Claro, Colorado, Natural, Maduro, and Oscuro (black).

Size

Size is defined by the length and ring gauge (diameter) of the cigar. You may be familiar with size descriptions such as Corona, Churchill, or Robusto. The problem here is each manufacturer’s sizes vary within these names. The better method is the actual length measured in inches and the diameter measured in 64ths of an inch. So for example, if a cigar is 6 X 50 it is 6 inches long and has a diameter of 50/64 inches, whatever you want to call it.

Anatomy of a cigar

Cigars have 3 parts, the filler, the binder, and the wrapper. The filler is the bulk of the cigar. The binder holds the filler together. The wrapper is the outside layer and gives the cigar its taste.

Of course there is a lot more you can and should learn. But these are the basics.
